How to Cure Lower Back Pain in Women

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Lower backpain in women is quite common. In fact, any kind of back pain in both genders is quite common. Studies have shown that close to eighty percent of all people will experience back pain at least one time in their lives. There are a number of causes that could contribute to back-pain in women.

Some of the causes of pain in women are muscle, nerve and ligament stress in the lower back, a sudden injury like a fall or something caused by an automobile accident, arthritis, any job that requires repetitive movement or sitting in chairs that do not promote good posture or standing for long periods of time. There are also some distinctly female causes for low back pain in women like fibroid tumours, menstrual cramps, pregnancy and endometriosis.

You should always see a doctor when you experience any lower back pain’s. Even though most of the time it is caused by routine wear and tear on the muscles, sometimes back pain’s in women (and men) is a sign of something more serious. A doctor can look you over and make sure that you are okay. You should always go to the emergency room if your lower backpain comes on suddenly or if it is accompanied by any sort of numbness in your extremities, flu like symptoms or if you experience a loss of control over your bowels. Those conditions when paired with lower back pain are a good reason to rush you to the nearest hospital’s emergency room.

There are a great number of treatments for back- pain in women. Treatments can include rest, ice, heat, an over the counter medicine like Advil or Naproxen and regular exercise. There are specialists in lower back pain who advocate acupuncture, seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis and taking up muscle and strength building activities like Yoga and Tai-chi.

There are also plenty of ways to prevent back pain in women. Women should get regular exercise, even before the pain starts. Regular exercise will keep her muscles strong and help fend off any stress or strain on the muscles in the back. She should always practice proper posture. Her office chair should be ergonomically correct and she should always walk and sit with a tall, straight back. She should do her best to maintain a healthy body weight (this can be worked out with her doctor) and should not smoke. Smoking can lead to other health hazards that will increase the risk of her contracting lower-backpain. Above all else, she should always remember to lift with her knees, not with her back.

Back pain in women is quite common. As previously stated, eighty percent of the world’s adult population will experience lower back pain at least once. As it turns out, our parents and teachers were right after all. Standing up straight, lifting with our knees and getting regular exercise really will be important in our adult lives.

Living With Diabetes - How to Minimize Complications

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

If you are diagnosed with diabetes as an adult, you have diabetes type 2. When a child develops the disease it is called diabetes type 2. Sadly, the number of people with this disease increases each decade. Today about 5% of the world’s population has diabetes.

While there is no cure for diabetes that we know of, there are ways to prevent it. The key is to take care of yourself. Not only must you exercise regularly and avoid too much sugar, but you must also eat plenty of fiber and eat low carbohydrate foods.

Complications with Diabetes

If you have this disease, there are things you can do to minimize your risk of suffering further complications. People with diabetes have a higher chance of heart disease, kidney failure, teeth and gum diseases, and blindness. This is a very serious disease that requires respect and concern. If it is not managed, it will take its toll on your health.

Those with the disease are two to four times more likely to have a stroke or heart attack. They also have a higher risk for infections with their feet. If left untreated, these infections can result in amputation.

Blood Sugar Levels Explained

According to the American Diabetes Association your blood sugar falls under 100 you do not have diabetes. If your blood sugar test result is between 100 and 125 you have prediabetes, and if the result is 126 or above you have diabetes. If you have prediabetes you need to work with your doctor to keep your blood sugar level from going any higher.

If you are diagnosed with this disease your doctor will be doing an A1C test to get the average blood sugar reading. The American Diabetes Association recommends that this level not exceed 7.0. It is very important that you make appointments and keep them on a regular basis.

Importance of Daily Exercise

Regular, daily exercise is extremely important for keeping your blood sugar levels consistently low. If you do not have thirty minutes at one time each day, at least try to exercise three times a day for ten minutes. Any amount of exercise you can do will help.

For each 1% you can reduce your level it is believed that you can reduce your risk of various health problems by 40%. That should give you a great incentive for following your doctor’s advice.

Do Not Skip Meals

If you are living with diabetes then skipping meals will not benefit you in any way. Your body needs the food to signal the pancreas and liver to do their jobs. After eating the body tells the pancreas to increase the insulin output. The body also tells the liver to shut down making more sugar. Unless you eat, the body does not send out these signals.

For those with this disease, these signals are less pronounced than in people who do not have diabetes. By eating small amounts throughout the day you keep your insulin levels in balance and prevent spiking or dropping.

If you are not eating enough you can become nervous, dizzy, light-headed and shaky. You might begin to have trouble speaking with correct sentences. This condition is called hypoglycemia and is caused by low blood sugar levels.

Alcohol and Diabetes

The prescription drugs taken with diabetes can have undesirable problems when alcohol is consumed. Therefore it is very important to not drink any alcohol or at least to drastically reduce the amount you ingest if you have diabetes type 2.

By taking this disease seriously and managing the kinds of foods and the timing of meals and snacks as well as making time for a daily exercise routine, you can overcome the problems and live a long life.

Gout Food To Avoid - 3 Top Tips

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Gout is painful and debilitating. But it can be largely controlled by the food you eat. The gout food to avoid is the kind with high levels of purines. This substance produces uric acid. Too much uric acid in the body causes gout. So it follows that avoiding eating foods with high levels of purines will help to lessen the chances of a gout attack. Here is my top 3 list of some gout food to avoid…

1. Offal foods are bad for gout. Things like kidneys, tripe, liver and tongue should all stay well off your menu. So should any red meat, at least if taken in excessive quantities.

2. Shellfish are also off limits. Avoid eating scallops, cod roe, crab, lobster, etc. They may taste great, but gout is very, very painful, and there are other, better things you can eat for nutrition.

3. Alcohol… Sorry, but too much of the booze will only add to your gout pain. OK, you can have a couple of glasses of beer, or maybe a glass of wine occasionally, but keep it down to sensible limits.

Gout is a painful form of arthritis. Some 5% of all cases of arthritis is accounted for by gout. It affects the joints and characteristically the sufferer experiences sudden, usually severe, bouts of swelling with redness and pain, often warmth too, in one or several inflamed joints. If you lose excess weight, this will help too, but pay attention to the gout food to avoid and sudden, painful and debilitating attacks will be much less likely.

Many people consider gout an old fashioned disease that has all but been eradicated. Not true, many people suffer daily from a gout symptom of one kind or another. How can you know if what you are suffering is truly a gout symptom? Do your research online and you can know if your gout symptom is something that is treatable, or much more serious.

If you know what gout is, then you can be aware if you are having a gout symptom. What gout is is a painful inflammation of the joints. It is a form of arthritis and eating certain foods can cause severe gout symptom. If diet plays a significant factor, than treatment of gout symptom should be done through proper diet as well as the proper medication.

One of the most recognizable gout symptom is a severe or sudden attack of pain. It will cause tenderness, warmth, redness and perhaps some swelling in some of the affected joints.

Gout symptoms usually attack just a single joint at a time. It especially likes to go after the big toe. The why of that is probably buried deep in scientific annals, but whatever, it is true. Those with gout must watch that they don’t mistreat their condition and lose a toe. Other symptoms of gout can be pain in the foot, ankle, wrist, hand and elbow. It seems as if deposits of chemicals called uric acid also called tophi will appear as lumps beneath the skin surrounding the joint.

If you think you are having gout symptoms, it is time to bite the bullet and go visit a doctor. You don’t have to suffer the pain associated with this gout symptom if you get yourself some physical therapy and find the medications that best address your gout symptom.
